Once upon a time, the Herameys were one of the most powerful families on Belaboras. Then came the fall, and centuries of relative obscurity. Nowadays, that family's legacy is on the shoulders of Caroline and her siblings. Of course, she's a Ballard now, married to her childhood love Chris - and being married to the Governor of Essegena means she's a very powerful woman indeed. But it's not political power that Caro cares about. She has a secret, you see: she's a Foresleeper. In her dreams she sees visions of the future. And that's the sort of power that can make a person reviled by society at large. It matters not whether she asked for the gift, nor whether she uses it for ill - it matters only that she has the gift.

Day to day, Caro serves as the chief doctor of the Essegena colony, a job which she considers far more befitting of her than being a political figurehead.
